In the wake of negative publicity about a southwest drought some lucky travelers are finding that the glass is indeed more than "half full" at Lake Powell.  Hotel rooms have been discounted as much as 25% and availability in this usually sold out destination has never been better.

"People who have been dreaming of a Lake Powell vacation but didn't want to commit to a date a year or more in advance will find that this summer is ideal time to bring their family to Page," said Joan Nevills-Staveley, executive director of the Page-Lake Powell Chamber of Commerce.  "The scenery is just as beautiful, and Bryce, Zion, the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley are still within a few hours drive."

Staveley adds that Page has long enjoyed the reputation as the hub of the Grand Circle, the ideal jumping-off point for vacations that include side trips to popular national and state parks in the southwest.

A recent unofficial survey of fuel prices showed Page service stations boasting fuel at 20 cents to 30 cents a gallon below Phoenix and Las Vegas during one holiday weekend.

Business continues as usual in the resort town of Page, with cultural events such as American Indian dancing, powwow and rodeo scheduled for the visitors who may be surprised at their good fortune to be able to enjoy such activities without the usual crowds.  Also planned for this summer are a free music concert, educational programs on such topics as geology and paleontology, in addition to the host of recreational opportunities.

"Those seeking a bit more adventure should consider mountain bike rentals, guided kayak tours, hiking, Colorado River float trips, ski boat rentals, wake boarding, scuba diving, snorkeling or four-wheeling," said Staveley. "For those whose idea of a perfect vacation includes room service, we recommend golf, slot canyon tours (we have great photo opportunities here), boat tours, or lounging by a sparkling pool soaking up that spectacular Arizona sunshine."

Local restaurants have revamped their menus, making even your meals part of the vacation adventure.  For those who have little time to spare, a scenic air flight may be just the ticket. This may be the perfect opportunity to prove to yourself that even though the lake level isn't at its highest, Lake Powell is still just as magnificent as its earned nickname, "the jewel of the Colorado."

"If you didn't think you could afford a summer vacation this year, you should consider the deals being offered in Page and at Lake Powell," Staveley said.
