A new Page history exhibit is on display at the Powell Museum

“The First Page” exhibit opened on Friday October 7 with a special member’s only preview on October 6th. Early Page resident Dora Knight talked about her memories of Page during the construction of Glen Canyon Dam. She and her husband Royce started the first airport in Page. Excerpts from Dora’s oral history interview are included in the new exhibit along with approximately seventy-five other Page area residents.

The exhibit is part of the Page Oral History Project administered by the Page Public Library and the Powell Museum. A collection of interview excerpts were selected for the exhibit to highlight the history of the early beginnings of a dam construction camp including environmental concerns, cultural changes, hard work, cooperation, and the excitement of starting a new community.

The exhibit was created with funds granted by the Arizona Historical Society and the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records Agency, a division of the Arizona Secretary of State, under the Library Services and Technology Act, which is administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Stop by the Museum and hear the stories of these “pioneers in station wagons” that lived and worked in the Glen Canyon Dam construction camp.

Interview excerpts from the Page Oral History Project can also be heard at lakepowellhistory.com.
