February 2016 Artist of the Month – Ron Larson

Ron Larson

“Vistas & Visions of the Colorado Plateau” by Artist Ron Larson

FINE ART EXHIBIT AT POWELL MUSEUM EXTENDED THROUGH JUNE 2016

“Vistas & Visions of the Colorado Plateau” – a new and evolving collection of paintings by artist Ron Larson has been extended through June 30, 2016 and 15+ new paintings have been delivered for display! In celebration of the exhibit extension and the new works, Ron is also our featured Artist of the Month for February with a reception to be held on Friday, February 5, 2016 at the Powell Museum.

The last 12 months have been amazing. The Exhibit opened almost exactly a year ago, and Ron has been returning and introducing new paintings from new locations – usually two or three at a time throughout the year. The Colorado Plateau is a huge area, 130,000 square miles in four states, and Ron has made it his mission to find those unique places of stark and unusual beauty and translate them to canvas. To have painted so many additional paintings and deliver them all in one visit has been a monumental task, and the museum felt it was worthy of a celebration.

Artist Ron Larson preserves the spirit of the wide open spaces, towering rock formations, meandering watercourses, and transitory moments of life on the Colorado Plateau in his watercolor and oil paintings. He often paints on-site surrounded by the inspiring landscape in many parks and monuments. Ron’s newest collection of paintings depict scenes from well-known places such as Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Rainbow Bridge National Monument, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Monument Valley Tribal Park, Canyonlands National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, and Grand Canyon National Park, along with lesser known, but equally stunning, parts of the Colorado Plateau.

Growing up and living in Utah, Ron spent almost 60 years of life searching for places of splendor and serenity which speak to him, bringing him peace and contentment. Ron’s paintings bring expressions of the Colorado Plateau’s marvels through visual vignettes of it’s space. Sometimes he uses the bold colors of oil, and sometimes the softer feel that watercolor offers, but always finds contrasts, where there are deep, dark shadows and striking reflections of light.

Inducted into the National Watercolor Society as a Signature Member in 2007, Ron is also a member of the Oil Painters of America, the Outdoor Painter’s Society, and the National Impressionistic Society. His paintings grace the walls of private, corporate, and museum collections from all over the world, and three of his paintings that have been in the Exhibit have won awards from national art shows in the last year.

Ron has recently participated in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area’s Artist in Residence program, the Scottsdale Celebration of Fine Art in Arizona, the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park Plein Air Invitationals, and two Utah universities have selected his art as part of their public art calls. Ron will also be a guest speaker in the Glen Canyon Lecture Series in May. Admission is free. The Glen Canyon Lecture Series is sponsored by the Page Public Library, the Glen Canyon Natural History Association, and Powell Museum.
