February Artist of the Month

February Artist of the Month – Jerry Lindsay

Local artist, Jerry Lindsay, has held a passionate interest in watercolor since his days in grade school. Though he majored in art in college, he was not able to pursue his interest until retirement in 2005. Page became his playground and many of his paintings portray the unmatched beauty that the area provides. He has held workshops for Glen Canyon Recreational Area, participated in the Artist in Park Program in the summer of 2012, and is currently presenting workshops at Coconino Community College.

Jerry participated in the Escalante Arts Festival in Utah where he received a purchase award for plein air painting, has been exhibited locally including the Friday Night Art Walk, and won first, second, and third place ribbons at the Coconino County Fair in 2012.

Arizona, and particularly Page, provide endless subject matter for Jerry. While he will be returning to his native upstate New York soon, his heart will remain in the beautiful Arizona where he has spent the last 43 years of his life. this exhibit is a humble “thank you” for the inspiration that Arizona will continue to give.

Join us Friday February 15th for an artists reception from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Powell Museum. The event is FREE and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

December Glen Canyon Lecture Series

Glen Canyon Lecture Series Presents

Carving Grand: Evidence, Theories, and Mysteries – An Update” by Wayne Ranney

Wednesday December 12th, 2012, 7:00 pm (Mountain Standard Time) at Carl Hayden Visitor Center at Glen Canyon Dam.

Grand Canyon is one of Earth’s most recognizable landscapes. Though scientists have studied the canyon for more than 150 years, a definitive answer as to how and when the canyon formed eludes them. The one thing they do agree on is that the canyon was carved by the erosive power of the Colorado river, but the river itself carried away the evidence of its earlier history. Carving Grand Canyon examines the many intriguing ideas and innovative theories that geologists have developed over time about the formation of the canyon. In the last seven years since the publication of the first edition of Carving Grand Canyon, new theories have been brought forth, and this second edition of the book captures these fresh ideas and examines them in the light of other theories. This story of a fascinating landscape is told in an engaging style that is inviting to casual readers interested in the mystery of Grand Canyon’s formation.

Wayne Ranney is a geologist and author who leads various excursions into the southwestern landscape for the Museum of Northern Arizona, the Grand Canyon Field Institute and the Smithsonian Institution. His books include Ancient Landscape of the Colorado Plateau, and Volcanoes of Northern Arizona. Wayne lives in Flagstaff, Arizona and teaches geology at Yavapai College in Sedona, Arizona.

Admission is free. The Glen Canyon Lecture Series is sponsored by Glen Canyon Natural History Association, Powell Museum, and Page Public Library.
