2017 Lecture Series/Christa Sadler

WHERE DINOSAURS ROAMED

Lost Worlds of Utah’s Grand Staircase

Christa Sadler will present an in depth look at the rich prehistory of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Come to the Page Community Center on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 7:00pm for an inside look at over a million years of science in Southern Utah. Reception to follow at Powell Museum. Enjoy refreshments, view Christa’s extensive fossil collection on display for the evening, and purchase the new book or have your copy signed by the author!

Southern Utah’s Grand Staircase region is one of the best places in the world to study the Late Cretaceous. In a relatively short period (geologically speaking!) of only 25 million years, southern Utah was at times covered with an ocean teeming with life, swampy shorelines, and massive rivers draining a huge mountain range in the west. The diversity of plant and animal life was astonishing, and the incredible fossil discoveries in these rocks have become a critical piece in a puzzle that stretches from Alaska to Mexico.

This event is free. The Glen Canyon Lecture Series is provided as a service to the community and area visitors by the following organizations:  Glen Canyon Natural History Association, Powell Museum, Page Public Library

janet-museum1

Local artist Janet Brown has been creating stained glass since 1978. As a young stay-at-home mother of 2, she needed something more than dinner and diapers! She launched her first home stained glass business in Pine Junction, Colorado where she could be a full-time mom and creatively cut glass.

Her love of color has been with her since her youth, when she would line up bottles of water on her window sills and drop food coloring into the water to marvel at the colorful creations. Stained glass seemed a very natural transition for her.

Her stained glass has evolved over the years and took a huge leap forward when she started firing glass in a kiln. Many of her current glass projects have both depth and dimension due to her ability to put glass on top of glass in layers before the firing.

The Powell Museum show is a colorful and vibrant display of flowers called “Desert Blooms”. These creations keep vibrant flowers blooming all year round! Plus Janet is offering a huge selection of Dichroic Stained Glass earrings for sale which are easy to mail to friends and family as Christmas gifts. Take a moment out of the busy holiday season and stop by by the Powell Museum and enjoy all of the new and fresh 2016 stained glass creations of Janet Brown!

Glen Canyon Lecture Series – Craig Childs

Powell Museum News & Events

The Glen Canyon Lecture Series Presents

Craig Childs

“I am putting together a somewhat dark and eerie presentation of uncanny or unusual moments in the wilderness, focusing on the vicinity around Page, sometimes going out a little farther. Ghost stories in a sense, these will be fitting for a changing season, the gradual darkening of autumn into winter. We are entering the time of year when stories have traditionally been told around the world, when people came together to weather these darker and darker nights. “

Powell Museum New Exhibit

Powell Museum News & Events

NEW EXHIBIT – NOW ON DISPLAY

RAY DUGI has been painting and sketching for five years, but already shows incredible depth of skill and talent. SPIRIT HORSE is Dugi’s first exhibition and showcases a variety of styles through mixed media images. SPIRIT HORSE represents Dugi’s dedication to always invoke his Native American heritage and rural roots into his creations.

Ray’s son, BRANDON DUGI, began taking pictures at the age of thirteen. The beauty he saw through the lens of his native surroundings encouraged the young boy to continue. The result of his years spent capturing the desert landscape is nothing short of amazing! BRANDON DUGI’S vision is vividly captured in his first exhibit, WALK IN BEAUTY.
