March 2016 Artist of the Month – Helping Hands

Helping Hands

Helping           Hands           Agency

The Helping Hands Agency is a contracted provider for the Department of Economic Security, Division of Developmental Disabilities. They provide programs and services for adults and children with Developmental Disabilities.

Students attend art classes daily with the Agency’s full-time Art Director. Individuals in the program experience a wide variety of art disciplines while expressing their personality through the medium they enjoy most. The Agency hosts art shows throughout the year. The students artwork has been very well received by the local community and surrounding areas. Their work clearly expresses that “everyone has something beautiful to share.”

The Helping Hands Agency’s goal is to support the individuals we serve and their families as they strive to learn and grow in all aspects of life. We understand the challenges involved in caring for a loved one with a disability. We therefore offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of the person being served and their family.

“Helping to build a stronger tomorrow, by strengthening and connecting people, ideas, and resources for a stronger community.”

February 2016 Artist of the Month – Ron Larson

Ron Larson

“Vistas & Visions of the Colorado Plateau” by Artist Ron Larson

FINE ART EXHIBIT AT POWELL MUSEUM EXTENDED THROUGH JUNE 2016

“Vistas & Visions of the Colorado Plateau” – a new and evolving collection of paintings by artist Ron Larson has been extended through June 30, 2016 and 15+ new paintings have been delivered for display! In celebration of the exhibit extension and the new works, Ron is also our featured Artist of the Month for February with a reception to be held on Friday, February 5, 2016 at the Powell Museum.

The last 12 months have been amazing. The Exhibit opened almost exactly a year ago, and Ron has been returning and introducing new paintings from new locations – usually two or three at a time throughout the year. The Colorado Plateau is a huge area, 130,000 square miles in four states, and Ron has made it his mission to find those unique places of stark and unusual beauty and translate them to canvas. To have painted so many additional paintings and deliver them all in one visit has been a monumental task, and the museum felt it was worthy of a celebration.

Artist Ron Larson preserves the spirit of the wide open spaces, towering rock formations, meandering watercourses, and transitory moments of life on the Colorado Plateau in his watercolor and oil paintings. He often paints on-site surrounded by the inspiring landscape in many parks and monuments. Ron’s newest collection of paintings depict scenes from well-known places such as Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Rainbow Bridge National Monument, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Monument Valley Tribal Park, Canyonlands National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, and Grand Canyon National Park, along with lesser known, but equally stunning, parts of the Colorado Plateau.

Growing up and living in Utah, Ron spent almost 60 years of life searching for places of splendor and serenity which speak to him, bringing him peace and contentment. Ron’s paintings bring expressions of the Colorado Plateau’s marvels through visual vignettes of it’s space. Sometimes he uses the bold colors of oil, and sometimes the softer feel that watercolor offers, but always finds contrasts, where there are deep, dark shadows and striking reflections of light.

Inducted into the National Watercolor Society as a Signature Member in 2007, Ron is also a member of the Oil Painters of America, the Outdoor Painter’s Society, and the National Impressionistic Society. His paintings grace the walls of private, corporate, and museum collections from all over the world, and three of his paintings that have been in the Exhibit have won awards from national art shows in the last year.

Ron has recently participated in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area’s Artist in Residence program, the Scottsdale Celebration of Fine Art in Arizona, the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park Plein Air Invitationals, and two Utah universities have selected his art as part of their public art calls. Ron will also be a guest speaker in the Glen Canyon Lecture Series in May. Admission is free. The Glen Canyon Lecture Series is sponsored by the Page Public Library, the Glen Canyon Natural History Association, and Powell Museum.

Georgia Johnson - Quail

Georgia Johnson – Quail

Georgia Johnson is a self-taught artist. Her works have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the Southwest, including the John Wesley Powell Museum located on the shores of beautiful Lake Powell in Page, Arizona.

Originally from Fullerton, California, and now retired, Georgia makes her home in both St. George, Utah and Greenehaven, Arizona.  Surrounded by the natural beauty and splendor of the Colorado Plateau and Southern Utah, she now has time to pursue her passion for painting. As an artist, Georgia creates art works for private collections as well as commercial enterprises. She enjoys painting creative, non-traditional portraiture in a variety of styles ranging from whimsical to classic. It is her belief that a good artist needs to be well-rounded.

Georgia and her husband, Rick, love to explore the back roads of the Southwest. Hiking, camping and boating provide inspiration for the magnificent colors that Georgia puts on canvas. As an active member of the Visual Arts Association of St. George, Utah, Johnson donates her talent and free time to improve the work of others, both new and seasoned.
